I'm a huge fan of horror movies. I've always been!
So, when I saw a new horror flick titled Don't Breathe send a Box Office monster like Suicide Squad to second place with its figures, my heartbeat switched gear.
I checked the cinema schedule at Silverbird Cinemas but it wasn't there yet so I'm really keeping my fingers crossed on this one.
Right now, one flick at the cinema that has my thoughts slightly off the disappointment of not having 'Don't Breathe' is 'Morgan.' I'll tell you about it much later. I'm also seeing it midweek at 8:35pm. Last movie I saw was Bad Moms and I loved it.
So, right now, I'll just share with you, my 5 biggest reasons I think all Nigerian horror fans should have this one locked down. Enjoy below:
- It's not all about blood
- The suspense has a heartbeat
- It's big
- It terrifies
- It's compelling
It's not all about blood
I once saw an Asian thriller/horror flick that had so much blood, it hurt my passion for horror movies at depths that shocked me. From the trailer, 'Don't Breathe' isn't all about blood splashing. Rather, it is as riveting as it is thrilling. SO, if you're the kind whose stomach can't hold too many scenes with blood, you'll be fine.
The suspense has a heartbeat
The suspense in this movie is the kind that excites yet terrifies. It gives very little away and just a peek at the trailer reveals that you're going to be in for one hell of a roller coaster ride.
It's big
The movie is heading for a $15 million second frame, bringing its total to about $54 million. That's impressive by all standards. It might not have a Will Smith or Samuel L Jackson but it puts up a performance at the Box Office to stand tall. The cast of the movie include Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto.
It terrifies
Sure enough, it's a thriller/horror that lives up to its genre. Who wants to be trapped in a house with a blind man with deadly secrets and a penchant for hunting down humans? It's one of those situations where the hunter suddenly becomes the hunted.
It's compelling
Not all thriller/horror flicks are compelling but this one scores. With a budget of $9.9 million, it's a story that's worth every dollar.
It's so good that critics are really talking about it. Here's what some of them think:
"Fede Alvarez’s simple housebound horror film is sparse on dialogue but its editing and sound design lend to a slow roll of dread that makes it a triumph"
- The Guardian
"A muscular exercise in brutal, relentless peril that should please genre fans."
- Variety
"Nothing interferes with the film’s main purpose, which is to put an electric razor to your nerve endings."
- A.V. Club
I'll leave you with the question: What can $300,000 make you do?
I'm rating this one 8.4
What would you rate it?
